Heimsath Architects designed the original Activity Center which opened in 2002. More than a decade later the firm was commissioned to explore options for updating the facility. The architects provided a collaborative process to include District staff and community members in designing an innovative expansion program. The solution devised an infill addition replacing the existing courtyard with new meeting spaces, an expanded entry, and improved circulation.

The project required significant coordination to update existing systems while designing the new structure. For example, the new roofing for the addition required reworking the drainage system. New rainwater collection tanks now capture most runoff and diverts it for landscape irrigation. Working collaboratively with the contractors, the team was able to keep the facility open for community use continuously during construction. The project consisted of approximately 11,000 sq ft of new addition and renovations and was completed in 2016.
