This display at Buc-ee’s, a popular stop for tourists and highway travelers, certainly caught my attention. It’s nestled in the cowboy and Texana area. These Old Rugged Crosses are ready for purchase, stacked alongside other secular souvenirs.

These log-hewn compositions are deliberately rough, though the finish is a shiny varnish. So there’s no mistaking these as church objects, the purveyors included a framed print of an old church hymn at the center of the display.

Maybe this isn’t the kind of cross to place in a quiet place as a focus of prayer and devotion. But I don’t doubt for $99.99 some visitors will buy one or more to add a touch of country to their living rooms. Maybe a cross can add a touch of spirituality as well.
